Hmmm.... wow. I never thought of that and neither did any scientist ever. I guess masks don’t work- I mean, you can smell farts. What more proof do you need? Well...wait a second! I forgot- we have this thing called “science” that relies on a bunch of stuff called “math” which- to be fair- is often less relatable to the fart sniffers of the world who might close the case here.

A “fart” is intestinal gas. Taking a common odor producing gas from humans- sulphuric dioxide- it’s size is roughly 3 angstrom in diameter if we envision it as a circle. The “corona virus” is about 125 nano meters in diameter as a circle. Our sulphide dioxide is 3 x 10-¹⁰ meters, or translated to nano meters... about 0.3. Several hundred times smaller per particle than “Covid.” Your “average” droplet of spittle is between one half a micro meter to 100 micro meters- that’s 4-400x the size of a single “covid” virus.

Industry testing used for dying of cotton samples such as done by Golanski et al. Shows penetration up to 80nm with 10nm as the lower end using carbon and titanium nano particles on treated cotton (as opposed to raw cotton.) Polyesters and many other synthetics show better performance against nano penetration due to their structure and common weaves.

So- we can see here that while one could be curious and wonder why they might be able to smell a “fart” through fabric, and certainly the average person could be forgiven for not knowing the relatively sizes of atoms and molecules and such- there’s a world of difference between asking the question “why can I smell a ‘fart’ or breath air through fabric but it supposedly offers protection against viral infection” and saying “this doesn’t work because I can smell ‘farts’.”

There is no clinical support that Covid 19 is an “airborne” contaminant- you theoretically cannot catch it simply from breathing the same air as the infected. It can be transmitted through the air via water droplets- which masks DO offer protection from- and simple math shows us that is the case.

Like so much hinging on science- many people have enough knowledge to be “dangerous” but not enough to be knowledgeable to make their own determination. There isn’t a shame I’m not knowing everything or not being a scientist- but there is a shame in speaking as an authority when one speaks from ignorance. The problem isn’t people’s opinions- it is when people speak on subjects that they do not have the knowledge to speak on, or do not bother to do the research before making a conclusion. Cloth masks are not the best protection against Covid- but they are readily available and cheap protection for ones self and others. Until and unless data shows otherwise.
