this is, if im correct, Pythagoras
5 x 5 is 25, 1 x 5 is 5
a2+b2=c2
c2=650
so c = 25.4
distance=25.4 feet

Correct, That is the distance they are away from each other... But what rate are they separating from each other?

They're separating at sqrt(26)m/s (approximately 5.9901m/s) because the Pythagorean Theorem applies to vectors as well as scalars so you can just plus their velocities into the equation.

5 x 5 is 25, 1 x 5 is 5
a2+b2=c2
c2=650
so c = 25.4
distance=25.4 feet
