It's all about "social norms." If you spend tons of money on Programming and dvds and what not to watch some tv show, memorize character names, get emotionally invested in the well being of total strangers and made up personas, buy the clothes and dress up as your favorite characters, travel long distances just to go to these big conventions where other fans go to dress up and watch and talk about all this; you decorate your house with all this stuff, overpriced pointless knick knacks you swear are "collectible" and "investments" posters of your favorite characters showcasing their bodies, often barely dressed or in their skin tight uniforms, and try to talk to total strangers about your little hobby- you are quite possibly a sports fan. It's all relative, we all have our hobbies. Society says some are cooler than others, but what's cool is being able to live a life where you enjoy what you want when you want. So to each their own.
