Panting in a cat is the sign of a heart defect that is usually fatal by the time they're two. I've had two cats that have died from this. It's very common.
While it probably can be, this isn't always true. Cats, like most animals, don't have sweat glands, so when they exert themselves and get overheated, they have to pant to cool off, just like dogs do. That is far more common. I'm terribly sorry for your loss, though.
