Actually it also pose a threat to society (re-population). In theory at least. Usually traditions are formed as a preventive measure against certain threats. So I believe that at some point it was actually a problem for a community and thus it was passed on without much thought about removing it.
Actually we're under populated. Scientists say that there will be a few billion more people before we stop growing. And developed countries are experiencing declining birth rate, causing aging population and requiring migrants to keep the economy stable.
